Privacy policy

Last updated: 1 October 2026

This English version is a translation provided for convenience. If it differs from the French version, the French version prevails.

This policy explains what Viny collects, where that data is stored, who it is shared with and how to delete it. By default, as little as possible leaves your iPhone.

1. Data controller

The Viny app is developed and run by Valéry Lacombe, who can be reached about anything to do with your data at:

app.vynoplay@gmail.com

2. The data we collect

A. Identity data (member accounts only)

If you choose to create an account (email, Apple or Google), we collect:

Profile
your first name or nickname and your email address.
Technical identifiers
your unique user identifier (UID), generated by Firebase to secure your session.

B. Tasting content and usage

Whether you use the app as a “Guest” or as a “Member”, we process:

Label pictures
the pictures you take are analysed to identify the wine and create your quizzes. They are kept on your iPhone and, if you are signed in to iCloud, backed up to your private iCloud space (see section 3).
Personal cellar
the history of the wines you have scanned, including the appellation, the winery and the harvest year.
Tasting journal
your personal impressions and your star ratings. Your written comments are strictly private and stored for your own use only.
Wish list
the list of wines you would like to buy.
Quiz results
your scores and the first names of the players you enter for multiplayer mode.

C. Location and statistics

Where wines come from
we use the appellation or village read on the label to place the wine on a map with Apple Maps. We never track your GPS position.
Usage statistics
only if you agree on the welcome screen, we measure how the app is used (for example a scan started or a quiz finished) with Firebase Analytics and Amplitude, hosted in the European Union. These measurements are pseudonymous: they are linked to a technical identifier specific to the device, never to your name or email address. Without your consent, nothing is sent.

D. Friends and sharing between accounts

The Friends feature is optional and only available to member accounts. As long as you do not add anyone, none of the following leaves your device.

Invitation code
a 6-character code linked to your account, which you share with whoever you like. You can create a new one at any time, which makes the old one unusable.
Friends list and requests
the technical identifier (UID) and first name of the people involved, on both sides. Removing a friend deletes the entry on their side as well as yours.
Profile visible to your friends
your first name, your profile photo and a few counters (bottles in your cellar, bottles tasted, number of regions, main region). This profile can only be read by people you have accepted as friends: never publicly, never by a search engine. It contains nothing from your journal: no bottle name, no rating, no comment, no place.
Profile photo
by default it stays on your device. It is only sent to our servers if you have at least one friend and the “Show my photo” setting is on; it is then a small thumbnail (128 px wide). Removing it in the app, or turning the setting off, deletes it from our servers, not just from the screen.
Two separate settings
in the menu of the Friends screen: “Share my activity” (the counters) and “Show my photo”. Each one can be turned off on its own, and turning it off deletes the matching data at the next update.
Bottles sent
when a friend sends you a wine sheet, only six fields are transferred (name, winery, region, harvest year, type, and the note they add), plus, if they included it, the full wine sheet (see “Bottle share link” below). Only you can remove what arrives in your inbox. On their side, the sender keeps a record of what they sent (the wine, the recipient, the date) and finds out whether you kept the bottle.
Bottle share link
when you share a bottle by link (vinyapp.com/bottle/…), the wine sheet, its quiz questions and your first name are stored on our servers and can be read by anyone who has the link, without an account. The sheet describes the wine (identity, grapes, pairings) and contains none of your ratings, comments or cellar. The web page only shows the name, the winery, the appellation, the region, the type and the harvest year, and is not indexed by search engines. Only share the link with people you choose.
Reporting and blocking
you can report an account and block it in one step. A report sends us the reason you picked, your identifier, the identifier of the account concerned and the name it was showing at the time. It is handled within 24 hours and can never be read from the app.
Notifications
a friend request or a bottle received can trigger a notification, if you have allowed notifications in iOS.

3. How data is used and shared

A. Artificial intelligence

To turn a picture into a wine sheet, the label picture is sent over an encrypted connection to the servers of Anthropic (Claude). When you ask the sommelier a question, it is sent along with the sheet of the wine concerned or, from the home screen, with the list of wines in your cellar so that it can advise you. Once you have rated a few wines, a summary of your tastes goes with it (favourite types, regions and grapes, your best-rated wines). Your written comments are never sent. This data is only used to produce the answer and is never sold.

B. Sync and cloud storage

Guest mode
your data is stored locally on your iPhone. If you delete the app, this data is lost.
Member mode
your data is synced to Google Firebase servers, so you can find your cellar on any device.
Bottle photos
if you are signed in to iCloud and cloud sync is on (the default setting), your photos are backed up to the private iCloud database (CloudKit) of your Apple account, in Guest mode as well as Member mode. Only you can read them: neither we nor your friends have access.

C. Service providers

We work with the following providers:

4. Your rights and control over your data

In line with App Store standards and the GDPR, you are fully in control:

Right to be forgotten
you can delete any wine from your history at any time. In your profile, a “Delete account” button instantly and permanently erases all your data from our cloud servers, including the profile your friends see, your photo, your invitation code and the entries your friends kept about you.
Managing consent
you can turn usage statistics and cloud sync on or off directly in the app settings.
Portability
your data is yours. Your tasting notes are never shared with third parties for advertising.

5. Security

All data exchanged between the app, our servers and our providers (AI, cloud) is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). It is then stored by these providers, who encrypt their disks. Access to your account relies on sign-in from Apple, Google or Firebase.

6. Contact

To access, change or delete your data, send an email to:
